“When I realized how ComForCare would enable me to make more of a difference in people’s lives, I was hooked.”

Unfortunate Circumstances Lead to a Life of Making a Big Difference

When my mom was diagnosed with fourth stage ovarian cancer, I had just turned 15. Like most young kids, I was invincible and thought my mom was too. It never crossed my mind that I would lose my mom to cancer until the day I did. In the three years my mom was battling cancer I saw a lot of doctors, nurses, hospitals and even worse, the progression of this awful disease.

Meet the Team | ComForCare Home Care of East Salt Lake - 11111-Include_on_Bio_PageLooking back, I am so grateful I was able to be there for my mom and care for her. I would take her to chemotherapy treatments and I would care for her after she got sick from the chemo.

Countless nights sitting by her in the bathroom rubbing her back like she use to for me when I was younger. My mom passed away shortly after my high school graduation. I love my mom and I loved being able to care for her.

There are a few things my family and I learned from this experience.

  1. Always tell each other  "I love you" and hug goodbye because we never know when we might be called home.
  2. Life is about quality, not quantity. The last 6 months of my mom's life was spent at home with family and not in hospitals or being sick from chemo. That was quality and the Best decision Ever!

I became a nurse because of that experience and how it impacted my life. I have been in the medical field for over 17 years. I started ComForCare because being home and being with family is a quality life. I became a Registered Nurse and have worked at local hospitals (The Huntsman Cancer Institute and University of Utah Hospital). ComForCare is a way for me to keep caring and help others to live their best life, a quality life!

Caring for Others Is a Family Affair

When Devin and his wife, Ashley, married, he started a job that just wasn’t quite right for him. But, he praises Ashley for her support during that new job and while finishing up school. When he was ready to move on from that job, Devin looked to Ashley, his biggest cheerleader. As a personal trainer, she loves to help her older clients stay strong and independent.

“It is always fun to talk to them and listen to how much they love her and are grateful for her because of her help. Ashley is a great example of caring for people. She demonstrates this through her own business with her clients. She definitely helps people live their best life possible. Her clients always say, ‘I've never felt better and healthier.’”

Devin was impressed with the connections that Ashley makes with her clients and wanted to help people in a similar way while using his medical knowledge. And he knew his father-in-law was the next one to consult. That’s because he owns a ComForCare franchise in a neighboring city. Devin always admired his father-in-law’s work as well. “My father-in-law took me under his wing. He showed me the ropes, so I could see if this was something I wanted to do. As a nurse, I was able to dig in and even do nurse assessments to see what it was like. When I realized how ComForCare would enable me to make more of a difference in people’s lives, I was hooked.

” And when it comes to running his business, Devin knows he’s learned from the best. “My father-in-law operates under the mentality that we’re here to provide quality care above all else – even the numbers. This isn’t about the number of clients, it’s about being there for our clients and caregivers. And I run my business the same way.”
