Caregiver, People Lover, Smiler
“I just want to help people.”
The Smile Test
The smile test is simple: I only hire friendly caregivers with a big smile. We are here to help people and empower them to make choices about their life. If you walk into a new situation with a smile and a warm “hello,” you really can put the other person at ease. It is amazing how powerful a genuine smile can be.
My Favorite Clients
My favorite clients were my grandparents. When I turned 16, my grandpa gave me a car to drive them to doctor appointments and the store as well as to run errands. My grandpa loved going to the hardware store to look at lawnmowers. Every year, he would trade in his lawnmower for the newest model.
After my grandpa passed away, my grandma needed more help and could not live alone safely. I had married and moved to Maryland, which made it impossible for me to care for her the way I would have liked. I now know the importance of one-on-one care. I know the importance of keeping my clients in their homes. We work continuously as our clients’ advocates because that is what family does.
My Most Memorable Moment
My family and I have served Montgomery County since 2006, so I’ve had many experiences that made me laugh and cry. One of my favorite moments was when I hosted a Joyful Memories® event with an Elvis impersonator to sing at a memory care unit. One of the residents jumped up and danced along to every song with her adult daughter. I could not resist the temptation and even joined in on the fun too. When Elvis had left the building, the daughter started to cry and thanked us for being there: They had not seen their parent dance in years although it was a passion. Dementia can do that to someone, but Joyful Memories is a testament to the power of music and the joy it can bring to those with or without dementia!
